Are You Applying For Scholarships?
Why does everyone ask seniors are they applying for scholarships? Yes, I get that it can help students save money when it comes to financing college but do you really think we do not know that. Some students just do not care. Plus, what is the likelihood that we actually get all or even some of the scholarships we are applying for? Now that is not me because I plan on going out of state and I cannot just cough up the money and make it appear like the kool-aid man when he hears his name. However, I do have the same mindset regarding will I actually receive these scholarships.
Why Am I Ranting Today? Well let me tell you, I have applied for over 30 scholarships this year. To be exact 19 for the out of state college I want to attend, 10 local scholarships I had to mail in, and 5 more that are "in progress." What is the likelihood of me getting these scholarships? Who knows. I feel like I am stressing myself out so much senior year with my class load, extracurriculars, and tacking on scholarships on the list is such a headache. I have to get letters of recommendations, write about different prompts for each essay, get applications signed by guidance, print out pictures, get my transcript, get my SAT scores... it is a lot. So, personally, I get why some seniors opt out of doing all that. I think I am okay with doing all these scholarships because I am okay with putting in a lot of work and getting rejected (that ain't no problem). But there are some seniors who do not want to waste time doing scholarships that they think they will not end up getting.
Are you applying for scholarships? Yes. Am I banking on it to pay for college? No. Well, at least not individual scholarships. I know that where ever I go either in-state or out-of-state I am going to have to take out a loan. So, for a fact since I live in South Carolina I can qualify for a Life Scholarship, and every in-state school I have applied to have offered me scholarship money on top of that. Because of that I am not stressed about receiving aide for college for in-state. For out-of-state (whew chilee), that is such big stress because they are so expensive. And I know it would be smart to attend the cheapest school but what about all the new experiences and opportunities I could have in a new city and state.
Are you applying for scholarships? Yes. Am I excited about it? No. Does it stress me out? Yes. Am I excited about beating other applicants and getting the scholarship? Hell yeah.
I hope that out of all the scholarships I applied for, that I luck up and get a good bit of them back because I do not want to take sell an arm and a leg to finance my college education.
But I wrote this to tell whoever reading this it is okay to not be doing RANDOM scholarships like it is a part-time job. To be specific I support people doing local or statewide scholarships that are likely to receive. For example, if you are applying to the Bill Gate's scholarship which is nationwide with a 24 on the ACT, 1000 on the SAT, and average school grades- what are you doing???? Do not do those types of scholarship, do what is realistic.
I hope whoever reading this good luck with their scholarship process!! If you are a parent do not aggravate your child over scholarships-- that makes us not want to do them or put in the efforst to perfect the scholarship application!
